icon for “The New South Africa.” Mandela was imprisoned for
27 years for his opposition to the Apartheid government. Released
in 1990, he immediately began negotiations with F.W. de Klerk,
South Africa’s president. Their collaboration led to the first
free election in 1994. Today, Mandela is remembered globally
for his unwavering commitment to social justice and democracy.
