"The Toraja peoples hold elaborate funeral rites that are their most important social occasions, attended by hundreds of people and lasting for several days. The valued kandaure stands on a pole next to the tongkonan, the traditional house of an extended family. The family owns the kandaure, which they lend out to the male family members of the deceased to wear during the mortuary rituals"
